Early 2024 Alert Keeps UltramapGlobal’s Global Team On Their Toes.

In any early January, receiving and offering Happy New Year calls and emails with friends and clients, old and new, is the norm. And it’s brilliant! What isn’t the norm however, is receiving an alert from the Met Office K1 weather buoy, a 6m tall, 3m diameter, 4.5 tonne piece of kit with anchor cables several kilometers in length, suggesting that it was floating – unshackled – around the Atlantic Ocean.

But that is what happened here at UltramapGlobal on January 2nd 2024. And, as we were aware, the buoy may very well have been dragging anchors.

So, this buoy, instead of doing its important day-to-day job of measuring air pressure, air temperature, sea temperature, humidity, wind speed, wind direction, wave height and wave period, was meandering dangerously close to the Lumen AC1 C cable landing in Cornwall. A cable that UltramapGlobal’s Global Monitoring Team protects using, amongst other things, our world’s-most-used AssetMonitor® software.

We contacted the Met Office of course, and this particular story had a happy ending. No (further) damage was done.

This unexpected event was a timely reminder that it would appear 2024 is going to be no less interesting and eventful as 2023 – our most vibrant and progressive year ever! (Look out for our 2023 Highlights Story – coming soon). All good. We’re ready!

Happy 2024 to you all.
