The Challenge.

Réseau de Transport d’Électricité, usually known as RTE, is the electricity transmission system operator of France. It is responsible for the operation, maintenance and development of the French high-voltage transmission system.

As a consequence of UltramapGlobal’s long standing relationship with UK National Grid UltramapGlobal has been protecting the famous IFA 2000 ‘interconnector’ HVDC Power Cable since 2017. RTE and National Grid are joint owners of this cable. When IFA2, a second interconnector between UK and France was launched by the same joint owners in late 2020. UltramapGlobal was asked to add the protection of IFA2 into the same contract.

RTE has ambitious renewable energy plans and the generation of power from Offshore Wind farms is a major part of that. Ten wind farms were planned between 2022 and 2026 for the seas around France and they needed to generate a resilient and reliable form of energy, protecting the wind farms and export cable from intrusive vessel damage.

The Solution.

UltramapGlobal entered the competitive tendering process for monitoring services and was awarded the contract to monitor all ten new wind farm export cables and new planned interconnectors from their installation phase through to completion and beyond, to 2026.
