Eddy, What’s been happening, in your world, in July and August 2024?
Probably the most significant ‘new’ thing for me right now is looking after new client Vodafone, alongside all my other clients as well. The Vodafone project has just started properly. I’ve written a report for the third month. This means I am testing, as I do with all clients, whether the fundamental Report writing approach for Vodafone is right – for them – as we go. We learn what works for the client’s unique requirements, and evolve.
Is there anything about Vodafone’s reporting that’s unique at this early stage?
Vodafone’s monthly report is long! It’s about twice the average number of pages. This is because it looks at the many landings of quite a complicated cable system.
It’s pretty standard other than that. The report covers the events generated and interventions we carry out while we monitor this cable system that runs between and connects many Greek islands and protects several landings, that’s where cables hit a shoreline, around the Greek coastline and islands including Kos, Rhodes and Crete. There are many landings. Between a dozen and two dozen.
Is this a particularly busy region for sea vessels?
Everywhere is busy! UltramapGlobal monitor over one hundred million vessel movements every single day around the world, as we work towards reducing the world’s cable strikes to zero. But in the grand scheme of things, I’d say that these regions are moderately busy, not super busy. I report on much busier geographies for other clients. We have to be careful though. One cable strike is caused by just one vessel. That’s why our monitoring team is always on, 24/7. We’re always watching. Whether the vessel traffic is busy or not so busy.
How many clients are you writing monthly Monitoring Reports for now?
About twenty. I’m busy, but it’s manageable.
And what else are you up to?
I was at Kendal Calling in August. The music festival.
And I’m in Singapore in September 2024 with UltramapGlobal as we are exhibiting at The Submarine Networks World Exhibition. I’ll be talking through some of the reports I create with potential customers and existing customers. It’s a great opportunity for me to learn how to improve reporting across the board, and report back, from those we work with now and from those we can work with in the future. I’ll be slightly nervous! But I am looking forward to it.
